Sofia Coppola, director of Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, asked Air for a song for the latter, as they had also helped out plentifully on the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. So the song Alone in Kyoto was written for when Scarlett Johansson's character walks alone around Japanese gardens in Kyoto. This was the same time as Air was making Talkie Walkie , and they weren't sure whether or not to put the track on the album, but in the end decided to put it on as a sort of outro to the album.
