In this introspective song, Gabe Saporta addresses the people who criticize him for making the transition from his prior work to now fronting Cobra Starship. The song and title are based off of a blog written by Absolutepunk.net member "anamericangod," which was titled, "The Scene Is Dead," and ended with the line "The scene is dead. Long live the scene." The blog discusses the evolution and downfall of the "scene," and the merits of image versus talent. (source The Scene Is Dead) Things evolved further as Gabe and anamericangod engaged in a public debate about various things concerning Cobra Starship, Gabe's involvement with Millionaires and the surrounding controversy, as well as the people accusing Gabe of being a sell out. Anamericangod was personally invited by Gabe to participate in a tell all interview for Absolutepunk.net.
He explained to Billboard magazine that this is one of a number of songs on Hot Mess where he opens up. He said: "I started Cobra with the intention of having it be fun and not heavy, but this album is definitely more revealing on a personal level than any other Cobra record."
