Biography

Amsterdam-based Cosmic Crooner is the moniker of Moon Tapes frontman Joep Meyer. Inspired by Serge Gainsbourg, David Bowie, Scott Walker, and having similar vibes as The Last Shadow Puppets, merging the feel of Father John Misty, The Lemon Twigs and Foxygen.

As explained in Heart Eyes Magazine about his debut single "Deep Down in Jazz":
“Deep Down in Jazz” embodies everything I loved about Arctic Monkeys’ Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino fused into one song. It feels like walking on stars or swimming in a pool of melted silver. Smooth crooning (hence the moniker?) meets playful piano and lyrics that tell the story of a musician destined for a downfall. Meyer says the vibe of his music produces a reaction similar to that of the color “Paris Green”— a wonderfully ethereal, but unfortunately poisonous, pigment.

Dutch music platform 3voor12 describes Cosmic Crooner's inspiration as coming from a long list of movie references: Il Deserto Rosso by Michelangelo Antonioni and Le Samourai by Jean-Pierre Melville to name but a few. "Scott Walker is an inspiration, as is the Brasilian musician Lo Borges. Cosmic Crooner is a direct reference to what I like: crooners and space-pop concept albums from the 70's, such as Ziggy Stardust".

Early 2023, Cosmic Crooner teased his debut album "The Perks of Being a Hypocrite" with the single "Spoiler Alert", and performed at the Eurosonic Noorderslag showcase festival in Groningen.
