enlightenment here is reached through an abstraction of the verse-chorus structure, which is used to carry on the immense sound palette over time and coherently make it grow through the overcoming of the repetitions of said structure; so that the progress of that structure is not an end itself, nor the structure that encapsulates the whole song, but a means to a greater end: smoothly and gradually elevating the song to the greatest enlightenment

This song evokes a really unique kind of sadness in me, I can't figure out what it is because I always thought this song was more hopeful but now that I'm older it seems like a longing for something that one could have had in life but doesn't. The "heroic redemption" doesn't exist, the queen doesn't exist and I can never beat "THEM" even just for one day.

Celebrating my 10,000th scrobble with this song. Genuinely the greatest song ever recorded, chills every time. Thank you for everything Bowie

The feeling of *knowing* that the chorus is coming. The swelling of Fripp's guitar. The ludicrous sense of release that hits at the end of the pause between "heroes" and "just for one day." The utter majesty of "and we kissed." The feeling that it could go on building for twenty or thirty minutes, Bowie straining further and further against the edges of his vocal range but somehow never failing to break through into spaces ever new. The feeling that it's all somehow building itself up and, simultaneously, crashing down around you in big silver shards... One of the masterworks of all popular music.

Very interesting how Tony Visconti recorded David's vocals on this one. He had him sing on a stage in an operahouse, with a mic positioned in front of him, and a mic in the balcony. The softer vocals were recorded with the close mic, and the loud vocals were recorded with the balcony mic. That's what gives the louder vocals their echo-y effect. Very cool!

Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay - but we could be safer, just for one day
