The Scott Walker influence in this is palpable. Could be on Climate of Hunter. Sounds like he's even trying to sing like him.

Most of the record failed to catch my ear at first, except this song, perhaps because of those Walkeresque overtones.

(Not that Walker wrote My Death, but the first Walker album is where most were introduced to the song, Bowie included.)

Yeah, just laughable ignorance. Embarrassingly so. Bowie went psycho-avant-garde as early as Walker did. Tilt was released mere months before Outside was, and Wishful Beginnings is as creepy as anything Walker has ever written. Both Bowie and Walker have acknowledged the influence of each other over the years; Bowie was influenced by industrial and electronics a long time before Walker was. I'm sure many can remember Scott Walker's personal message to David Bowie on his 50th birthday which reduced him to tears. It's even more inane when you consider that Bowie was covering My Death and telling everyone to listen to Scott Walker as far back as the 70's.

Bowie plagiarizing Walker?! Walker found his voice in the wake of Bowie, no? Granted, the style has radically changed, but I've always kind of imagined (phase 2) Walker as the dark dream / avant weird version of what Bowie could've been if he had not, y'know, been insanely famous and popular. Nice vanilla pudding attempt at trolling!

The bass is really Outside-esque. Like from, I think, Leon Takes Us Outside, as you said. I'd kill to hear those unreleased tapes of the post-Outside stuff. I wish he would release them as a fanclub release or something; not as a main album as such, but something people can buy from the site if they care to hear it.

vv That's exactly what I'm thinking, that it's either an Outside Outtake or something from 2. Contamination, he said he had loads of tapes laying around from sessions so it might be something from those. I think it sounds quite similar to "Leon Takes Us Outside" too. I could be (and probably am) totally wrong of course.

I can't stop thinking that this one might be an outtake from 1. Outside. Or was it mentioned for 2. Contamination? There's also a little bit of Heathen in it I think. However, amazing song and the best choice to end The Next Day.

I love how it quietly creeps in after the glorious would-be finale of 'You Feel So Lonely You Could Die'... the beginning reminds me of 'Leon Takes Us Outside', the rest is very Scott Walker. If he ever makes another album, I want this to be the starting point.

Yes, there is a definite Outside vibe to it as well. His singing style is very reminsicent of some of the stuff on Outside.
