The Man Who Brian Eno Called ‘the Daddy of Us All’: ... La Monte Young "is often considered the founder of minimalist music, having stripped composition down to its bare elements of rhythm, sound and tempo as early as the late ’50s." (New York Times, July 22)

Dream House is the most amazing concept and listening to 'Dream House 78' 17"' is an otherworldly experience. It's the most relaxing shit, I swear! It's so beautiful. Thank you, La Monte Young. I'm lucky to be alive at the same time as you. Thank you for inspiring a generation of avant-garde musicians and composers.

everyone curious about the Theatre of Eternal Music and early La Monte Young in general - seek out Day of the Holy Mountain immediately. it's a 1964 bootleg which features almost 90 minutes of amazing drone goodness, and insane saxophone soloing from mr Young in the latter half

just read the conrad interview and wow turns out la monte young was a fucking prick. you'd think a guy that makes music like this would do wiser than refuse to release any recordings and force other musicians to sign paperwork stating that he was the sole composer. it sucks cause I really enjoy everything the Theatre of Eternal Music did back then - if not for La Monte's snobism, we would most certainly have remastered collections from that time (which would not have been out of print for goddamn decades, too).

In fact there are albums of Cale from that period with Conrad on violin. The albums are good. As for TEM, there are no official releases, only the unofficial Day of Niagara. Conrad's frustration is understandable. Most of the work of La Monte, besides TEM, was also not released, and a large part never recorded. I will end by a quote of John Cale from Up-Tight: “LaMonte was perhaps the best part of my education and my introduction to musical discipline”.

What do you mean by “this music”? Tony Conrad had something to do with La Monte for one or two years when he was part of the Theatre of Eternal Music (or the Dream Syndicate). There is no mystery in TEM being a collaborative project, this was always known. I have never heard La Monte claiming that TEM's music was composed by him alone. While it is obvious that he was the main creative force. He started to compose in the first half of the 50s, and composed several pieces that then will be called drone in the second half of the 50s (Conrad and Cale were at high school at that time). TEM then was created to perform and elaborate those ideas. Besides La Monte and Marian Zazeela, TEM at different points of time included, Angus MacLise, Billy Name, Tony Conrad, John Cale, Terry Riley, Terry Jennings, Jon Hassell, Alex Dea, Sterling Morrison, and maybe others. Of course Conrad and Cale contributed and learned from that performances.

I have no reason not to believe what Tony Conrad says: http://media.hyperreal.org/zines/est/intervs/conrad.html

This music which was supposedly invented and composed by La Monte Young, in reality was developed in the early sixties by Tony Conrad (violin) and John Cale (viola) in their common improvisation group with Young and Zazeela. Young kept all the tapes that were recorded and refused to give any credit to the others, claiming that these were his compositions.

"[...] The preeminent innovator in drone-based music is composer La Monte Young, who, in the 1960s, composed very long pieces for clusters of sustained tones [...]." That is what they say about drone. And I am here only because of that. And the first impresson of mine was that he is a genius. Even though he would not. Great music indeed!

does anyone know (or have) where you can find a recording of Dennis Johnson's legendary 'November' ? This was said to be what inspired Young to start experimenting with long tones - Young said that in performance it could last up to 6 hours - though i've only seen a mention of: 1) a poor quality 100minute recording & 2) Links to Sound files on Kyle Gann's website that don't work.
