My parents practically made me watch this film when it aired on PBS in 1982. It was a transformational moment in my life — a rare soundtrack that I have listened to so many times over the past 40-plus years that I no longer associate it with the film, yet can see every scene play in my mind's eye. The progression of intensity from the quietest moments of "Organic" to the chaotic fury of "The Grid" captures the essence of the "crazy life out of balance" we humans have created, and ends with the haunting sigh of "Prophecies" — ghostly creatures wandering about the floor of the New York Stock Exchange... a frail hand reaching from a hospital bed... a failed rocket forever spiraling in flames toward the ground. The images taken mostly from the mid-1970s and archival footage seem very dated today, but the human condition portrayed is largely unchanged even in our high-tech modern world. The soundtrack is ageless and remains one of Philip Glass' greatest works in his vast and solid catalog.

Cloudscape and Pruit Igoe are masterpieces in my opinion. We are all different. Philip Glass is where it's at and is innovative, of our time and evolutionary and profound. He has moved classical music forward to the 21st. century.

I'd kill to play the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack in my college's orchestra. Unfortunately, minimalist classical is not as well known as it needs to be for that to happen...

So wonderful that even after a million times of listening it's still gripping and utterly hypnotizing. I've never come closer to a religious experience than the first 10 times I listenened to this album- the majority of these deep into the night unto early morning on loop. Like some below have said: life changing music and movie. For myself certainly.

I once saw a screening of the film in a large theater while musicians played the score live! It was spectacular.
