As a metalhead, I tend to not really listen to lyrics. Whether they're fantastical, rooted in the occult, or in generic political rebellion, metal lyrics aren't always the most intriguing or elegant. I'm fine with that. I'm here for the dynamics, the energy, and in some cases, the aggression. But while this album CAN come off as a series of book reports, I found myself researching Amelia Earhart, the Boston Molasses Massacre, Babyface Nelson, and the Dakota War of 1862. It made me remember how a great concept can elevate an album, giving it emotional heft and staying power. But even without any of that, this album is just amazing from a musical standpoint. Looking forward to seeing them live ... whenever that'll be.

If you ignore the lyrics, this album is a fantastic blast of music that doesn't pull any punches and gives 100% from start to finish. If you get into the lyrics it's a fucking masterpiece. I kinda hate myself for sleeping on this album for so long but god damn I'm glad I finally decided to give it a try. This is something every metalhead needs to hear.
