brian really was a master of economy. fitting all these gorgeous ideas into just 2:15...and it doesn't feel short, either

The number of times I've seen this (and the title track) dismissed simply as filler is infuriating, especially considering it's one of the musically progressive pieces on the album. I'd argue that it is in fact the centrepiece, and one of the main reasons I keep coming back to it.

You know you have an amazing and extraordinary album in your hands when even the (usually boring) instrumental intermezzo is such an incredible trip.

"the first progressive movements in music". EVER. Before this, music had no progression whatsoever. It was all completely regressive you see.

this is beautiful. I love the back and forth conversation between the snare and timpani toward the end.

I would have to consider this the best instrumental I've ever heard. To the untrained ear, one doesn't get nearly all of what it holds. Knowing the Beach Boys ability to put out great vocals, I think this could have been even more great, but it's hard to imagine it could get any better. I would not want to take away from anything, but sonic beauty of the voice is hard to resist. 5/5
