Ah, fuckin' Magical Mystery Tour, man. That shit's a wild fuckin' ride, ain't it? It's like, you've got these gnarly tunes just floating around, and they're like, "Hey, fuck structure," but it's all good, 'cause it's the Beatles, right? They're like, "Fuck it, let's throw in 'I Am the Walrus' with those trippy ass sounds," and everyone's brains are like, "What the fuck?" But in the best damn way. And you're spot on, "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" are like a fucking double punch of awesomeness. They've got that vibe that just says, "Fuck you, we're changing music." It's like, who the hell cares about conceptual unity when you've got tracks that slap you in the face with innovation, right? So, what's your take on the whole EP versus the album shit? You think they were just messing with everyone, or was it a mad genius move? And what's your favorite fucked-up track from that trippy as hell album?

Top 2-3 Beatles album for me. Love so many of these cuts and has way better psychedelia than anything on Sgt Peppers (beside maybe Mr Kite!)

Whenever I listen to ‘Baby You’re a Rich Man’ I imagine I’m King Midas sitting alone on his throne, having destroyed everything he once loved or cared about, and consumed by loneliness and self loathing

That's probably cause the B side is just a collection of all their 1967 singles + their b-sides, which were added in a later reissue to the original EP consisting of the first 6 tracks.

as for the album version, it does flow/feel like the singles compilation it basically was, but it's still great. definitely the most accessible glimpse into their psychedelic period. i'm not sure if i'd put it ahead of peppers but the fact that it's close just speaks to the level they were on back then. they came out within 6 months of each other! everything between peppers and MMT was written, recorded, and released in 1967

(caveat: in terms of songwriting, i'm not *positive* that none of these 24 songs were started before '67...but at the very least, the vast majority were not. and songs changed so much from sketchbook to studio back then anyway)

it's "underrated" because it was the soundtrack to a flop movie, and all the best songs on it were just already-released singles that capitol tacked onto it for the american market, which most people back then bought separately anyway. in britain, it was just an underwhelming 6-song EP

okay sorry to spam but i'm listening to a rip of it now and gotta amend, i didn't realize "walrus" was on the UK EP! that's a big difference. and the running order is totally different/better than side one of the capitol album. why the heck did they reorder the tracks, the album version would definitely be improved if they'd left it as it was...

I don't recall people ever talking about this album, but I think the individual songs on it are stronger than on Sgt. Pepper's. The only reason I give Sgt. Pepper's the nod is, I think, the fact that it's a (loose) theme album. They are both incredibly good albums. I would love to see people mention this one more often.

This is the only album in which I clearly prefer John's work to Paul's. It was his creative peak.

Back in December 1967, on Christmas Leave from BCT, with two of my fellow inductees, we would get high, and listen to this album hours on end. About a month later, just after we finished Basic, the Tet offensive broke out, and the party was over..

probably the worst Beatles album cover, don't know what they were thinking - I prefer the UK cover

it certainly does, it's the bloody Beatles - but compared to their old album covers this one is so bad

This is the height of the psychedelic phase. There would still be remnants of it on The White Album, but this is where their psychedelia reached its climax. Side 2 is just the Bomb, probably the best side in the entire Beatles catalogue.

Song for song this is actually a stronger release than Sgt. Pepper, I would say. A handful of songs here trump virtually anything off that album. Sgt. Pepper's has the edge for being a more cohesive album but even that's a bit overstated; Sgt. Pepper's is hardly the "concept album" many claim it is.
