So far “The City” is my favorite track off the record. What inspired the long rant at the end of the track? It sounds like you just lost it.
(Laughs) Yeah, I kind of did. With the last line of “this is a revolution!” I wanted sort of a rant. I pretty much went in to do the vocals and I just told them to give me a couple takes because I don’t cut and copy lyrics, I just try and do it all in one take. I went in and basically told Matt Goldman, who has produced all our records, that I didn’t know what was going to happen because I hadn’t practiced it but I just wanted to ramble. I didn’t necessarily want it to be on the music or anything and I just thought it’d end when it should end but I don’t know. I told him to hit record and we’ll see what happens. I believe that was the second take that was used because the first take I got so screwed up on the lyrics that I just lost where I was. So we used the second take and you can kind of tell at the end I kind of cut that last thing short because I had to fit in “this is a revolution” but that is just what happened and I liked the performance of it so we kept it. I wanted to capture the performance more so than each individual line or lyric because basically it ends with such powerful words then that choir part-it’s so big and triumphant that I had to work our way to that point.
