when i see a lanky girl with a bit of jaw, wearing an anime graphic tee, and pretending to be mute to hide an angelically husky voice. I always lick my thumb to shape my eyebrows, swish my hair back, and say "hey mamacita, what rythm games you autistic about"

i mean at the end of the day no matter how you interpret individual lines, they generally portray the trans woman that's the subject of the song as a positive light and someone the singer is really genuinely in love with, and i think that's a really great thing to do in the 70s

he says "i'm glad i'm a man and so is lola" and some ppl interpret it as saying lola is a man but i interpreted it as saying lola is also glad the kinks guy is a man

I think he’s saying Lola is a man bc that’s how ppl thought in 1970 but I mean ppl interpret stuff differently I think that’s the power of music bc ppl interpret the messages different ways

yeah i mean i'm trans so obviously i'm biased but either way i think the song is overall a good portrayal of trans people for something made in the 70s

huge agree! The Kinks were very progressive, and the lead singer Ray Davies and his brother Dave (the lead guitarist) are both bisexual men 😌 they said bi and trans rights

Catchy and very disturbing at the same time. It's amazing that a song about a transvestite could be a smash hit in 1970.

Had to see the lyrics to understand it wasn't promoting you know what. :p I like lyrics that are strange and suggestive.

"Well I left home just a week before And I'd never ever kissed a woman before But Lola smiled and took me by the hand And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man Well I'm not the worlds most masculine man But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola" *hands up and waving*
