Okay! I'll bring only my best and most beloved recommendations for you! First off, I'd recommend listening to Moi Dix Mois more. Maybe because my Mana bias is as hard as diamonds (Insert inappropriate joke here), but mostly because they rock! My favorite songs are Monophobia, La Dix Croix, Nocturnal Romance, Lamentful Miss and Je l'aime. I'm getting Nocturnal Opera for my birthday, which is very exciting! It's my favorite album of theirs, you see. I'd also recommend Közi. My fav songs by him are Honey Vanity, Que Sera Sera, Incoherents, Innermost, Crimson Star, Nocturne, Promenade, and Grottesca. His カタルシス album is my second favorite album of all time! LAREINE is just... Amazing. A band of flowery and beautiful rock that never fails to take my breath away. Metamorphose, 冬東京, Partir, Fleur, Je t’aime and Scarlet Majesty are my favorite songs. My favorite album is Imperial Concerto, I think? I love all their albums equally, really.

Awesome! This is great! I've heard a lot of cool things about Mana and really respect him. I always regretted having not listened to Moi Dix Mois very much, so it's the perfect time! :D I've actually never heard of Kozi or LAREINE; I'll check them all out right away and let you know what I think. :DDDD

What a wonderful bio ❤ I'd make a good one too, but Last.fu's character count only lets me say the basics with just enough room for an ever changing gag. What a wonderful music taste you have there, Jrock is my bread and butter as well. I gotta say, Atsushi Sakurai is a God amongst men indeed, I do love me some Buck-Tick. Also, I'm taking Asian studies too! After I finish my Law courses this spring, that is...

Thanks. ^_^ And that's cool! More people need to take Asian Studies, especially here on the U.S. east coast. :P Asian Studies and Law is a good combination for studies! I'm Asian Studies and Social Justice. I agree that Sakurai-san is a God. xD Too bad my husband doesn't want me hanging posters of him all over the walls in our room. He doesn't share my enthusiasm, lmao, though he tries his best to be tolerant. Your music taste is great too. ^_^ If you ever have anyone you'd like to talk music and rant to about music you like, I love recommendations.

Haha, your husband reminds me of my friends. "I discovered a brand new, super cool musician!!!" I'd say, and they'd ask "Is he Asian?" I'd reply yes. And they would groan and quietly leave before I'd begin my newest rant, ahaha. Also, same here! I take recommendations of any genre (except for country, I just cannot) so if there's any beloved band/artist you'd like to share, I'm all ears! If you ever want a recommendation from me, just give me a few examples of similar bands/artists, a genre or two, or even just a general description (Old school Visual Kei, New School Visual Kei, Female vocalist etc.) and I'll give you band/artist with a list of their best songs. Thank you very much for following me back, I appreciate it ❤

I'm so excited! :D I love exchanging music recommendations! I used to have one Last.fm friend who I used to get recommendations from all the time, but they went inactive. :'( I haven't heard from them in years. Oh well... Lol, my husband is South Korean. I think he's jealous of Sakurai-san, maybe. He just says over and over "I just don't like him." He also doesn't really like rock in general. There are a few exceptions. He likes DIV. He says he wants to date the vocalist Chisa...and the guitarist Mia from MEJIBRAY. LMAO. So unless it's about Chisa or Mia or discussing our taste in J-rock men (my husband is bi), he doesn't share much of my enthusiasm for jrock. He likes J-pop and jazz. :P Anyway, throw a recommendation at me! And thanks for following me too. ^_^

BT's albums have all been really enjoyable for me. Their overly sexual songs are my guilty pleasure just because they're so much fun and there's so much energy, also it's hard not to love hearing Sakurai say the word fuck with his vocal prowess. Though ultimately, I too gravitate towards their more emotionally reflective ones just because of how beautiful their are. One that comes to mind as well is the Rain Song.

situation would be greatly improved if everyone all took a step back and weren't all such in a rush to condemn and to make definitive statements without having thoroughly evaluated them first. With more self-awareness and restraint, as well as consideration of the other party's world-views and values, we'd all have an environment more conducive to finding mutually beneficial solutions and a meeting ground where possible. Less stratification, more unification! (I'm aware these are all extremely high demands for a species with a propensity for making things as difficult for themselves as possible and a lot of the time are incapable of rising above basal instinct-driven needs/ wants, but if only we could recognise our differences are also where our similarities coincide!) Anyway, I've gone on quite the ramble, and I suspect you have much more knowledge and life experience than me, so I entreaty you to continue challenging me and initiating further constructive discussion and debate in the

future! My internet kept dropping in and out yesterday so I just realised the shout between this and the next didn't post. I think I was transitioning into the topic of Kon. You raised a bunch of valid points, a lot of, especially on Paprika, which had not before occurred to me. I see what you were saying of the mischaracterisation of mental illness, though on the matter of the woman and the baby, I guess it could be attributed to post-natal depression which is a pretty real thing. I also think perhaps Kon could also be given some credit for at least arguably humanising homeless people to some degree, which isn't something you see that often in media. I feel like there are many things in Japanese media we would point as 'problematic.' Like you mentioned, the reduction of 'okama' to crude tropes for comedic value. Also, their schoolgirl and idol culture (yikes) which is often very creepy/exploitative in nature (to us at least).

However, I think there's also value in prescribing to some degree of cultural relativism on the matter, or at least recognising that the standards of our assessments are somewhat limited in nature due to the difference in culture. Furthermore, it's worth keeping in mind the roots of Japan's complex cultural values and behaviour arise from their traditionalism. And that in itself is also not unequivocally good or bad... It can be both; good - e.g. Japan's low crime rate and their very organised and clean cities .. bad- e.g. individualism is often discouraged to the extent that teachers won't discipline bullies for picking on someone because they're 'different' in some way, & aspects of Japanese nationalism

Overall, I can see how cultural awareness of what we in the Western world crusade for as rights movements have difficulty in even coming to germination. They just haven't built their society to function like ours, and in understanding that, I can also understand Kon's works and intentions better. Thus, I suppose I'm more forgiving of him, and give myself leeway to appreciate his masterful technical skills and experimentative concepts. However, again you've raised a bunch of interesting things to consider and you've reminded me how much there can be to learnt in adopting a more critical lens towards everything which I see as our responsibility as consumers.

I've begun to venture into my own half-baked thoughts based on casual observations and research which I haven't had the time nor opportunity to test and to synthesise into a clear and well-substantiated view, so forgive me for any overly ambiguous statements. This may be a slight digression, but I feel like there's a lot of underlying tension between traditional 'left' and 'right' these days and issues are debated often with too much circular reasoning, personal bias and logical fallacies are all too prevalent (well, when are they never?). I'm not sure I can phrase this perfectly in words at this moment in time, but I suppose in some ways though we appear a lot more 'progressive' on the surface, in reality we've regressed in the fundamentals. In the light of much mud-slinging and general uncouth vitriol being spewed forth by both sides (I'm an Aussie and we arguably have quite the flair for profanity), objectivity and analytical thinking gets lost all too easily. I think the

But yes, back to the other topics you raised. I imagine that the usual small, but vocal minority would stir up a ruckus denouncing it as another 'goddamn leftist movement' or some other nonsense like that. I'm by no means in a position to give a well-informed opinion because I don't have experience with gender studies or know anyone with experience with it, however, at the same time I'm not sure I can concur exactly. Mostly because I feel like I can't immediately point towards it as the solution as I feel like it is an extremely complex issue that requires some shift in attitude on a broader social level first in general. Though, the media is certainly a big part of it, and in many ways directly responsible, that's for sure. In addition, I guess it links closely to identity politics which I find is swiftly pervading contemporary culture these days, and that itself is subject to critique and I'm not yet educated enough to sort out of my position towards it.

I think a great many courses out there would benefit from being more interdisciplinary in general. My interest lies in medicine, and so that's one I can evaluate in particular. I guess the whole process of vetting applicants for med school is very rigorous and meticulous in the first place, and the course itself already very intensive, but the quality of physicians produced could be even higher if it were compulsory to dabble in the social and political sciences. Not only would this help with navigating the pesky bureaucratic side of things later on, but a better grasp of the diversity and workings of one's social milieu (because in reality the majority of people who make it are of a particular socio-economic status) would be hugely advantageous towards better service and patient interaction. The idealist in me also thinks this would help push much-needed reforms in our health-care system, but that's a whole other matter!

Hello! I'm miraculously still alive and kicking which constitutes well in my books! How have you been? I'm an ass for never replying to your old messages, but I shall proceed to remedy that right now. :p In regards to your comments on Hollywood; exactly. Never ending cash-cows and mega-franchises making more movies we never wanted, just to squeeze a few more bucks. Sadly most applicable to kids movies / the family genre, *cough* Finding Dory *cough*. Not to mention mainstream heavyweights that actually have potential to create change and set the bar higher, *cough* Marvel movies and their endless queerbaiting being the figurative embodiment of the phrase 'no homo!'. They have this vast array of wonderfully established and developed male relationships and then predictably there will be the hastily tacked on romance with some random chick who gets like 5 minutes of screentime or some other similarly implausible thing because god forbid anything other than heteronormativity!

I'm ashamed to say I have not yet seen any Kurosawa films, but I will soon rectify that! I'm quite interested in asian cinema, especially after seeing Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder which was wonderful. Aha, I do enjoy the odd kpop vid for eye candy, they're just so well put together. I used to listen to a lot of BEG, T-ara, SHINee and Sunny Hill also. SM sucks period, they have a great track record of lawsuits and losing members from some of their best and most successful groups. I hope their artists are happier and making better money somewhere else, it's appalling.

I agree with that, whatever panders to lazy audiences and will bring in the most revenue. Dazzling but hollow inside. Playing on superficial emotions, egoistic wants. I think a prime example of that for me was being dragged along by someone to see Spectre last summer when it first came out, and I was completely bored out of my mind for the whole thing, but the rest of the cinema was packed and everyone else was really enjoying it. Well, the James Bond franchise has always been style over substance, but this one was especially awful. The way women are portrayed in it also does my head in. I don't know what people find remotely appealing in Bond as the protagonist, he's the most mind-numbingly bland spy archetype ever. I have nothing against films made purely for the sake of enjoyment , but yes, something with as much influence as the entertainment industry should be more actively self-aware.

Aha, I find there's actually quite a wealth of resources online if you know where to look, it's just a question of motivation and finding enough time. And of course, the only way to improve exponentially would be to practise regularly, preferably with a native. Haha, thanks a bunch! Do you have any fave BT songs? Ah I see, that's an interesting thing to think about, can we and should we. Dang, I actually never picked that up, especially given females feature as the main character in a lot of his works! Do you have any examples? There are definitely quite a few misogynistic mindsets and elements entrenched in Japanese culture and society though, so I definitely see why.

omg I hate the shitty formatting here, I need paragraph breaks damn it! Gauze is really different in sound from their newer albums, more kind of dark gothic rock and vkei, but I personally think Mazohyst of Decadence and Raison d'etre are some of the best tracks. I'd like to hear what you think of it! Omg, I noticed you listen to Tohoushinki. That really brings back some memories ah, I was so obsessed with DBSK back during my kpop phase when I first started middle school. Kpop for me was never the same after they broke up, though I guess I should be thankful because it was then I finally started expanding my music tastes haha.

appreciating good filmmaking. I enjoyed 5cm per second too, though Makoto Shinkai is a bit of a hit or miss for me. Not sure if you've seen it, but although Garden of Words was stunning visually, the narrative itself felt a bit lacking, although this could be justified by the fact it's a pretty short film. Do you think there's any 'must see' films I should definitely prioritise on my to watch list? :D

I'm not too familiar with pre-80's jrock but it sounds interesting! Ah I see you study Japanese too? I have been too for the past 5 years, but I'm nowhere near the proficiency level I'd like. I wasn't aware such a site existed! Though, I'm not sure I'm the type of person to go out and meet total strangers in real life hahaha. BT is pretty underrated, their discography is great and Atsushi is a damn sexy ass hunk of a man. Ahhh, I see! Well hey, maybe you'll take all those different elements one day and make an awesome film! I too adore Satoshi Kon's style, it's a shame he passed so soon, I feel he had yet to produce his greatest works. I'm especially fond of his editing, and his penchant for match-cuts. The things he could do with animation was pretty incredible. I've still have a lot to see before I consider myself anywhere near well-versed in film, but I really enjoy watching Every Frame a Painting's videos on YT, (maybe you're familiar with him), they've taught me a lot about

It's super rare to find anyone who likes old J-music, even though I'd say where I live people have more 'indie' tastes. Indeed, there's no problem finding people with similar tastes here, but I'd love to find someone in real life; it's always more fun listening/going to music events with other people. That sounds pretty awesome, do you have any favourite directors or movies? I'm especially a fan of asian cinema and animation, I've got a mile long list of movies I'd love to make my way through on Letterboxd haha. Thanks for the rec, I'll make sure to check them out! Kyo's vocals always give me goosebumps, calling to mind Kaishun, which is one of my faves from Diru, though I have to save Gauze is probably my fave album of theirs.
